Supporting People
Definition: Supporting People is the name given to government funded policy that describes housing support and how it's organised
Supporting People is the name given to government funded policy, introduced in 2003, that describes what housing support is and how it is organised. Under this policy, local Council's have responsibility for identifying what the local housing support needs are, for funding the services to meet those needs, and making sure that the services are effective and provide quality services. Local Council's have contracts with the organisations providing the services, and these specify the type of service to be provided. Until 2008 the Scottish Government provided each local authority with an annual "ring fenced" budget that could only be spent on Supporting People activities. Ring fencing was removed as from April 2008, and the Supporting People budget is now absorbed into the general funding given to local authorities. This was done to give local authorities greater flexibility and responsibility in funding services to meet local needs.
