Choice based lettings

Definition: Choice based lettings (CBL) schemes allow applicants to bid for council and housing association tenancies.

The Homelessness Act 2002 included the provision to facilitate the introduction of "advertising schemes" for allocation of social housing vacancies, so that applicants and social housing tenants can have more choice and control over where they live. The government target is to have all Local Authorities operating Choice Based Letting (CBL) schemes by the year 2010. Vacant homes are advertised in a variety of ways, e.g. website, newsletters, local media, housing offices, and applicants "bid" for vacancies. The bidder (has to be registered) with the highest priority is usually offered the vacancy
