Supported housing services for homeless families in Scotland

Under the legal definition of homelessness, not just people who are living on the street are homeless. People are also considered homeless if : they have no home in the UK or anywhere else they are staying somewhere where there is no legal right to remain they have a home but cannot access it they live in a boat or caravan and there is nowhere to put it they have a home but it is unreasonable to stay there e.g. because it is in very poor condition not all the members of a family who usually live together can continue to do so in the home where they have been living together People who are homeless may be able to get help to find somewhere else to stay, by making a homelessness application at the local housing department. There are many temporary supported accommodation services for homeless people in Scotland. Some are "direct access" hostels, where a homeless person can apply to stay in person, and these are usually staffed 24 hours a day. Other staffed hostel accommodation is provided for people referred by the local Council homlessness service, and sometimes other agencies. These hostels provide individual or shared bedrooms with communal facilities like bathrooms. Hostels may be gender specific, and/or cater for people of specific age groups. Some temporary housing comprises self contained furnished scattered or cluster flats where residents receive visiting support. Homeless people may also receive "resettlement support", to help them move into and sustain an independent tenancy.
