Supported housing services for people with hiv / aids in Scotland

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infects and gradually destroys a person's immune system and this reduces their protection against infection and cancers. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a term that describes the point when a person's immune system can no longer cope due to the damage caused by HIV. Nowadays the terms "late stage" or "advanced" HIV infection are used rather than AIDS. Since the availability in the mid 1990's of effective drug treatment, people with HIV are increasingly living with it as a manageable chronic disease, although there is still no cure. There is no supported accommodation in Scotland specifically for people with HIV, although there are specialist floating support services in two council areas which provide visiting support to enable people with HIV to maintain their tenancies. Nevertheless, people with HIV may be eligible to receive a generic floating support service in most areas should their needs require it. These are services where staff provide housing support by visiting people in their homes, and some provide a combined care and housing support service. Other support services that might be of assistance to people with HIV are Care & Repair Services and Community Alarm Services.
