Housing support services for young people in Scotland

By younger people, most service providers are referring to people aged 16 or 17, though some also include people from 18 to 25 years old. Both housing support services and supported housing are available in all areas of Scotland for younger people who are vulnerable, at risk of abuse or violence, or who are moving out of a care home or foster care and setting up home themselves for the first time. Housing support may be provided in a number of ways – by live-in staff or volunteers, by visting support staff, or at a centre or foyer that the young person visits regularly. Supported housing for younger people may be in shared houses or self contained apartments. Sometimes communal facilities such as a meeting rooms, games rooms, club rooms are available to encourage people to mix and learn social skills. The aim of all services will be to assist the individual to live independently and successfully in the community.
