Housing support services for people with alcohol problems in Scotland
Substance misuse is the taking of illicit drugs and/or alcohol that causes harm to the individual, people with whom they have close contact, and the wider community. Misuse of volatile substances and prescribed drugs is also likely to cause similar harm. Substance misuse harms the health of the user, psychologically and physically, and can cause social functioning and legal problems.
Some housing support services specialise in providing support for people with alcohol problems and some for people with drug problems, and others provide for people with both problems and/or who are homeless. Housing support services for people who are substance misusers usually have close links with treatment services.
There outreach/floating/visiting support services for people who have, or are recovering from, a substance misuse problem. Accommodation services include "wet" houses (shared housing/hostels where residents can drink but support aims to minimise the harm this does), and accommodation where abstinence is a condition of residence and residents are supported to recover from their addiction problem.
